The Controversial Issue Of Abortion - 1088 Words
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in todayââ¬â¢s world. With the evolving moral standards of society, abortion is becoming more and more justified. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first twenty-eight weeks of pregnancy. People donââ¬â¢t seem to realize that abortion can ultimately have the best overall consequences. This topic should be viewed from a consequentialist view, or from the moral worth depending on the positive or negative value of the consequences. The choice of abortion doesnââ¬â¢t matter as much as the consequences of the choice itself. While some consider abortion murder, others believe it as saving a life. It can save a mother from an unwanted pregnancy and it can save a child from an unwanted future. A woman has the right to choose abortion if they believe it is necessary and dispose freely of their own body. I will begin by arguing that abortion can have the best overall consequence when a mother and a childââ¬â¢s future is uncertain. A child shouldnââ¬â¢t be put through a rough childhood if the mother is aware of harsh living conditions or not being able to physically, mentally or economically support a child. For instance, if a woman was raped, the mother would be unable to raise a child because of the emotional pain caused by the rape, and the child would just be a constant reminder of what happened which can lead to abuse of the child. Or let us say that the woman is in an abusive relationship withShow MoreRelatedThe Controversial Issue Of Abortion878 Words à |à 4 Pagesrecent discussions of abortion, the controversial issue has become whether or not women should be given the right to take their unborn childââ¬â¢s life away. Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools: 1999ââ¬â2000 and 2009ââ¬â10 (NCES 2012ââ¬â014). National Center for Education Statistics, Institute of Education Sciences, U. S. Department of Education. Washington, DC. Web. 24 Jan. 2013 This source is a presentation of unbiased information about both the overall arts education programs and specific sections including: visual arts, music, dance, and theater/drama. The report utilizes a plethora of charts, graphs, and other visual aids to help organize and present the information. Parsad and Spiegelman first present their findings on overall arts education programs including the percentages of schools offering visual arts, music, dance and theater classes. They then dedicate ten to fifteen pages discussing the particulars of each section of the arts listed above. There is so much information in this article that it would be great for someone looking for a broad spectrum understanding of arts education programs. The visual aids complement the information presented and would be easy to incorporate into a variety of works. For someone who is looking to get very specific information about a specific program then this would be a good source to start with, the way the report is divided makes it very easy to find information on a specific sections of an arts program, i. e. music or drama. It would provide the reader with enough information that they could ask their own questions and be able to look further into a specific topic. Catterall, Dumais, and Hampden-Thompson. March 2012. The arts and achievement in at-risk youth : findings from four longitudinal studies. National Endowment for the Arts. Research Report #55). Web. 24 Jan. 2013. This research report is a presentation of years of studies conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts and similar organizations, most being government funded. The authors arrange the report in such a way that the bulk of the report is given through the use of visual graphs and charts, which are accompanied by conclusive statements like ââ¬Å"Teenagers and young adult s of low socioeconomic status (SES) who have a history of in-depth arts involvement show better academic outcomes than do low-SES youth who have less arts involvement. They earn better grades and demonstrate higher rates of college enrollment and attainment. â⬠(12) Most of the graphs simply relate percentages of students with low and high levels of art engagement to achieve certain things like high school graduation, entering a bachelors program, and attaining a steady professional level career. For every study and graph presented or reviewed there is clearly cited sources, if any confusion remains the appendix and cited pages are very clear about how to find more information. Being that this is a report of findings from a national organization it is not biased to or for support of arts programs. For anyone looking for specific statistics to use in a presentation or report of their own, this research report could be very helpful. As previously stated the bulk of the information is presented through graphs and charts that utilize percentages, and is therefore very easy to take and use in a presentation without having to do much work yourself. For someone looking for a more scholarly breakdown of the benefits of arts education on high-risk students this report will not be as helpful, as it would be time consuming to trace the information presented back to the original sources. Dwyer, M. Christine. 2011. Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning Americaââ¬â¢s Future through Creative Schools. Presidentââ¬â¢s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Web. 24 Jan. 2013. The reports emphasizes the essential role that arts education programs play in improving student engagement and building creativity. Dwyer discusses, in a lengthy and wordy overview, the current Arts Education programs and policies shortcomings. ââ¬Å"It is widely agreed that the U. S. public education system is not adequately serving a significant portion of our nationââ¬â¢s children and that public K-12 schools must change dramatically o achieve the Administrationââ¬â¢s goal that the United States become a global leader in postsecondary attainment by 2020â⬠¦ School leaders and teachers will need to step up to the challenge of finding new ways to engage many more students in meaningful learningâ⬠¦ â⬠(27) More importantly, this report discusses possible solutions such as reinvesti ng in arts education, and argues for creating arts-rich schools that can engage students in ways that complement the study of the arts and other traditional subjects such as literature, history, science, and mathematics. Another key takeaway from this report is it shows readers the link between arts education and achievement in other subjects. Being that this source is a report by the Presidentââ¬â¢s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, it attempts to present evidence to support the positions of the president and his corresponding political party. As political and wordy as this report is it would most likely benefit someone looking into the politics side of arts education, it would not be as helpful for someone looking for developmental and long term benefits of art involvement in schools. Rabkin, Hedberg. 2011. Arts Education in America: What the Declines Mean for Arts Participation. Based on the 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts. National Endowment for the Arts. (Research Report #52). Web. 24 Jan. 2013. This report presents its findings after researching important question related to arts education in America. Questions like: Has participation in arts programs declined? What does it mean for teachers and students? How has this affected participation in other extracurricular activities? How does this affect support for programs? The article presents the questions to the reader and then follows up with information that supports both positive and negative claims about the answer. Charts are used when needed to simplify information into an easily digestible visual aid. There are numerous sources used as evidence for the information presented, as well as suggestions for further investigation into the questions presented. This report has a very neutral stance towards the information presented. There is good information presented for varying arguments and the ultimate decision is left to the reader. This source would be a fair report to use in a work, especially if in an argumentative essay you need information for the view that opposes yours. However for someone looking for highly specific information this report will only be useful for an introduction into the questions being asked about the national education programs. Oxtoby, David W. 2012. The Place of Arts in Liberal Education. Liberal Education, v98 n2 p36-41 Spr 2012. Oxtoby uses a great deal of logic to explain his opinion on the place of arts in liberal education and he uses statistics to support his views. In his article, he states that diversity in the curriculum is a keystone to success in any liberal education program. He also claims that part of that diversity needs to include a program where students can express their creativity. Being able to express their creativity and the stimulation provided by arts programs lead to more successful students, both in academics, community involvement, and professional work environments. This article is a good source of simple and sound logic in support of arts programs being included in all liberal education. Oxtobyââ¬â¢s statements and presentation of the information is biased towards supports arts programs, but he always includes evidence to support his ideas. Also, while he does not approve of excluding arts in liberal education there is never any negativity in his statements, only more supporting evidence for his ideas. Some readers will find this article to be dry and uninteresting unless they already have some knowledge and opinions on the place of arts in education programs. Serial Killer Observation Essay Example For Students
Serial Killer Observation Essay Charles Manson is in fact one of the most widely known serial killers of our time. He can easily be considered the boogey man of society. Many people still to this day fear him and his past, yet now an old man in a prison cell, one may wonder what created such a monster. In learning about personality I thought that it would be interesting to apply some of the concepts that we have learned from the text and in class to a certain individual. I have no idea why in the end I chose Charles Manson. I think maybe it is because of his tragic life before the murders, a life that most people dont know about. Mason was the illegitimate son of Kathleen Maddox, a 16-year-old prostitute. Manson had no contact what so ever with his father (ATWL.com). The first thing to point out is Alfred Adlers point of view on Birth Order. Adler believed that the order in which you were born influenced your personality. Manson was the first born. Adler says that the first born may become authoritarian or strict. Feels power is his right. The first is usually a problem child, a neurotic, criminal, drunkard, and a pervert. Knowing Mansons future in crime it is interesting how Adlers theory fits in (Stein). Another thing is that Manson never had any sort of a relation ship with his mother or his father. His mother would often take off and leave him with strangers. Once she even traded him for a pitcher of beer at a local pub (Bugliosi 20-22). Ainsworth and her colleagues developed three types of parent-child relationships. Manson undoubtedly would fit into the last category : Avoidant relationships. In this type of a relationship the mother doesnt respond to her childs needs, the baby is neglected. It therefor develops a sense of worthlessness and possible anger towards authoritative figures (Burger 162-163). According to Erikson one can either develop a sense of basic trust or a sense of basic mistrust. If the mother is avoidant as in Mansons case the child will most likely develop a sense of mistrust. This will lead to a life of estrangement and withdrawal (Burger 117). Mansons life continued to be one crime after another. He was arrested for several instances where he stole cars and committed robberies. In prison he attacked another prisoner with a razor blade and continued to sodomize him (Bugliosi 67). Freud may have seen this as frustration of the libido. Which in turn, causes aggression. This may also explain the act of sodomization against the other prisoner (Burger 153). Karen Horney would most likely have seen Charles Manson as one who Moves against people. It is way that she believed a group of people handled their anxiety. To act aggressively may help deal with a poor home environment. They compensate for feelings of inadequacy by pushing other individuals around (Burger 125-125). During the summer of love Manson appealed to those who where like him in many ways. In fact many of the girls that became familiar with Manson saw him as a Father figure. Most of them, if not all developed sexual relationships with Manson. He was known as the father of the cult (Bugliosi 111-125). Freud may have seen something a bit like the Oedipus complex here. The Oedipus complex is named after a mythological figure who knowingly married his mother. Although they were not biologically related, Freud may have argued that they were in need of the father figure in their lives (Donadio). One could also say that Manson ruled in an authoritarian manner. During the years in his cult he convinced other members that he was godlike. He also made them go on a horrible killing spree. According to Erich Fromm this is the tendency to fuse ones self with somebody or something outside of oneself in order to acquire the strength which the individual self is lacking (Fromm, p. Nutrition vs. sport performance Essay163). I believe Evilness and self-loss are as real as are goodness and aliveness. They are the secondary potentialities of man if he chooses not to realize his primary potentialities (Fromm 145-152). Fromm believed that exceptionally is a man born as a saint or as a criminal. He thought that most of us have dispositions for good and for evil, although the respective weight of these dispositions varies with individuals. Hence, out fate is largely determined by those influences which mold and form the given dispositions. He believed that the family is the most important influence. But that .

UAE became a federal in 1971, and the states that make up UAE federal state include Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Furairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain (USA International Publications, 2007). Today, UAE has its capital in Abu Dhabi, which also acts as the political, economic, and social administrative center of the fe deral state. The official language of the federal is Arabic, while Islam is the official religion. The form of government is a constitutional monarchy, where the current president is Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan, while the prime minister is known as Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (USA International Publications, 2007). UAEââ¬â¢s per capita GDP is estimated to be at par with those of leading West European nations, while the growth of economy has largely been associated with oil revenue and increasing service sector economy. Socio-Economic Background Before the formation of the federal states and the discovery of oil within the UAE federal, the countryââ¬â¢s economy depended largely on subsistence agriculture, nomadic animal husbandry, extraction of pearls and the trade in pearls, fishing, and seafaring (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). During this period, the country was ââ¬Ëunawareââ¬â¢ of oil resources and therefore, what was witnessed was limited exploitation of natural res ources in the country, which later resulted into emergence and continued exercise of simple subsistence economy (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Economic development for the country is traced to the formulation of The UAE First Development Decade, which was formulated in 1970, prior to the formation of the federal states on 2 December 1971 (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001).Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This was the moment the federal established roadmap for the development of its formal economic, social, and political institutions and coincided with massive increase in extraction and production of oil resources. The economic growth of the country was to be boosted in 1973 when the world witnessed massive increase in oil prices, a situation that led to increased oil export by the federal state (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Since its formation, UAE has enjoyed relative politi cal stability, where political structures in the country appear to resonate well among the different ethnic groups in the country. Moreover, the countryââ¬â¢s political class has constantly tried to enhance equitable distribution of oil resources and this has led to development and high performance of social and economic infrastructure, high salaries for workers, and high standard of social services such as health and education (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). This has raised living standards in the country and effectively reducing the likelihood of internal political and social unrest. Moreover, the government of the federal since its formation has continuously promoted aspects of human rights, and this, in essence, has led to promotion and maintenance of political and social stability (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Since its formation, UAE Federal State has been trying to promote and develop key economic sectors in the country. However, the dominant economic sector, from which the fe deral continues to generate high revenues, is oil, gas and mineral economy (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). The country is perceived to contain vast reserves of oil, both offshore and onshore. At the moment, UAE is believed to be drilling and producing about 2 million barrels of oil daily, although with enhanced technology, the country can produced up to 3 million barrels of oil a day (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). According to 2000 estimates, it was established that UAE has in possession around 98.8 billion barrels of oil which makes the country as the third largest oil reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia and Iraq (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Economy of United Arab Emirates specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More At the same time, UAEââ¬â¢s oil reserves are estimated to constitute 10% of overall global oil reserves as per 2000 estimates (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Given its daily production of oil, UAEââ¬â¢s oil reserves have been estimated to have a lifespan of around 123 years before they can be depleted. Natural gases constitute another resource that UAE economy depends on. For example, in 2000, it was estimated that UAE has an approximately 6 trillion cubic meters of proven gas (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). At the same time, it was established that the country possess about 4% of total gas reserves. As a result, UAE is ranked at position four in the entire world as far as gas production and reserves are concerned. Daily production of gas in the country is estimated to be about 2940 million cubic feet, where if the current daily gas production is maintained, the reserves of gas the country holds will last for around 60 years (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Other natural minerals that are vital to the economy of the country can be subdivided into three categories: rocks, sand and soils, and metals. Rocks and sand have been exploited where they are wid ely used in the construction industry. Although still poorly performing, agriculture constitutes another sector to the economy, which contributes about 4% to the GDO (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). Agriculture development in the country has largely been limited with scarcity of land, harsh environmental conditions, and limited water resources (Al-Abed and Hellyer, 2001). However, the government for the last 30 years has been increasing efforts to develop agriculture sector through numerous incentives and support programmes. Service sector is also growing as one avenue contributing to the growth of UAE economy.Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! At the moment, it is estimated that the service sector contribute about 40% to the GDP of the country. Oil and Gas in the UAE In 1981, there was the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which brought together six countries of Middle East involved in the production of hydrocarbons resources (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). The six countries that make up the GCC block include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). The countries came together with the aim of helping each other grow and progress economically. In order to achieve these economic goals, the GCC Block aimed at coordinating country membersââ¬â ¢ financial, monetary, and banking policies that was aimed at establishing a common monetary union (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). The countries came together largely given their commonality in aspects of politics, cultural, language, economic background, and religious aspects. Involved countries entered into agreement that aimed at cooperating in matters of economy. One of the major achievements of the GCC Block has been realized through introduction of single currency in the GCC member states based on the commonality aspects member countries share. The major objective for this initiative is to see member countries build on a considerable degree of monetary convergence in about ten years to come that is characterized by high degree of exchange rate stability, general low inflation rates, and co-moving interest rates (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). At the same time, GCC Countries as part of their cooperation set plans to integrate their stock markets, where already some at tempts have been made towards this goal. Initially, two plans were available for implementation and they included merging all the stock markets into a regional bourse and also connecting them and establishing common unified rules and regulations. Member countries were to operate within the regulations in their individual stock exchange and this in turn was to make it possible for the citizens of the member countries to trade in stocks under similar rules (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). The role of this regional block to member countries can be perceived within the purviews the countries have made as far as economic integration is concerned. The preoccupations among member countries have been premised on the need to achieve economic and financial integration. Numerous efforts have been made by member countries and such efforts include lifting formal impediments that earlier restricted free movement of national goods, labor, and capital across the countries. Subsequently, the cou ntries have been able to develop similar policy preferences in key areas of concern. For example, the countries have been successful in maintaining price and nominal exchange rate stability, together with an open trade regime and liberal capital flows. Moreover, the countries of GCC have been able to initiate in place an open-border foreign labor policy that aims to ensure there is sufficient supply of labor across the countries. It should be remembered that, activities carried out by GCC countries has not just concentrated at seeing growth in hydrocarbons sector but has also accelerated efforts at initiating structural and institutional reforms aimed at encouraging diversification, enhancing non-oil growth, and also developing human capital (Fasano-Filho and Schaechter, 2003). As a result of these efforts to promote common economic goals among the GCC Countries, the member countries have been able to increase their GDP per capita by about 32% especially from 2002-2007 (Saif, 2009). Oil producing countries across the world have for a long time operated under the umbrella of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which in its entity is a permanent, intergovernmental organization (OPEC, N.d). It was established in 1960 at conference held in Baghdad where the pioneer countries of the organization included: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela (OPEC, N.d). Later on, these countries were joined by other oil producing countries such as Libya, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Angola, and Gabon (OPEC, N.d). Each of these countries joined at its own specific year with the earliest being Libya in 1962 while the latest to join being Angola in 2007 (OPEC, N.d). Furthermore, countries like Indonesia and Gabon have since suspended their membership in the organization. OPEC mission is integrated in its broad objective, which is aimed at; co-coordinating and unifying petroleum policies among the member countries with sol e goal of enabling the members secure fair and stable prices for their petroleum products (OPEC, N.d). Moreover, the organization works to enhance members achieve an efficient, economic, and regular supply of petroleum to the consuming nations through the established policies to enhance efficient oil production. The policies adopted are largely aimed at ensuring the countries receive fair return on capital they have invested in the industry (OPEC, N.d). OPEC operations and mandate in the wider environment of ââ¬Ëpetro-politicsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëpetro-economiesââ¬â¢ has been to see oil producing countries receive benefit is for their hydrocarbons resources. In this way, OPEC has been at the forefront in advocating and leading the pace in setting oil prices at international level aimed at benefiting member countries. Moreover, the organization is actively involved in regulating oil production among member countries through quotas and this is precisely aimed at ensuring members reap maximum benefits from their oil resources. OPEC activities in the wider perspective have been viewed to constitute those of cartel tendencies, where the organization has actively participated in activities such as initiating pricing system for crude oil in the global market, introducing group production ceiling, initiating reference basket pricing, enhancing dialogue and cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC countries, and ensuring oil market stability is realized (OPEC, N.d). UAE being one of the members of OPEC has operated under the regulation of OPEC whereby the organization sets quotas for the member countries as far as oil production is concerned. Oil quotas operate as limits within which member states have to produce oil and not exceed the level or amount accepted. Every year, OPEC reviews the oil quotas for each member state and as a regulation, each member is supposed to adhere to the set regulations. The OPEC quotas aim at regulating oil production among member states with strength of ensuring fair competition prevail and that, members are able to receive benefits for the oil they produce. Nevertheless, in recent times, there have been concerns especially in UAE with regard to OPEC quotas where UAE believe that OPEC quota for the country has failed to reflect the size of its resources (Ayalon, 1992). Moreover, the country believes that, concessions to other producers within the cartel were being made at its expense. Advantages of OPEC quotas have been largely reflected in the manner member countries like UAE have been able to realize genuine revenue generated through oil production and international price stabilization but disadvantages on the other hand have effectively been manifested through limit countries have been made to operate within (Ayalon, 1992). Non-Oil Sectors Economic diversification in the UAE started in 1970s, specifically after the discovery that Dubai had no enough oil resources. The government therefore set in motion to diver sify the economy of the federation from over-dependence on oil. Today, UAE diversified economy is booming to an extent that average annual non-oil growth rates in the country witnessed progress from initial 3.6% between 1981 and 1990 to 7.3% between 1991 to 2000 (USA International Publications, 2007). Much of this growth has been stimulated by a surge in trade and manufacturing as well as the evolution of the UAE finance and insurance sectors (USA International Publications, 2007). For instance, UAE government continue to promote liberalized trade regime which is further coupled by the countryââ¬â¢s favorable geographical location and the country has in turn evolved into a powerful financial center among the GCC Countries (USA International Publications, 2007). At the same time, the backbone of the financial system is the banking sector, which is the second largest in the GCC in terms of total assets. Apart from the financial sector, the tourism sector in the country is booming a nd it plays a significant economic role in the country, especially in Dubai. Investment from the government in the last number of years has seen growth and progress of tourism sector in the country and specifically in Dubai. Investment in the sector has been directed at developing infrastructure and enhancing advertisement and marketing of the sector, and today Dubai is one of growing centers in the world visited by large number of visitors every year. The developments in this sector and the related sectors have continued to play positive role to the countryââ¬â¢s GDP whereby, the overall share of non-oil GDP rose from 35% in 1980 to over 70% in 2002 (USA International Publications, 2007). Manufacturing industries have also emerged largely sprouting from the hydrocarbon sector. For example, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, there has been massive establishment of manufacturing industries, which specialize in the production of fertilizers and cement. Furthermore, gas products have been prom oted through establishment of various industries. Market for these products has been both at local and international market where demand has forced the concerned industries to increase and enhance their production capacity. Other areas of specialization with regard to manufacturing industry has been in the limestone and marble mining and processing which again plays critical role to the countryââ¬â¢s economy. Agriculture has also become another area UAE has constantly injected resources and these efforts have bore fruits. For instance, the agricultural although affected largely by poor climatic conditions in the country continue to experience remarkable results where production has continued to increase. Furthermore, immediately the country gained independence and the first ten years saw an increase of about 200% in food production in the country where also land under cultivation increased by about 500% (). The federal government commitment to the promotion of the national agricu lture of the country can be evident through increased annual budget allotment, which is estimated to be about $ 100 million every year (Peck, 1986). Further, every Emirate has been increasing its budgetary allocation to the agriculture sector a situation that has seen greater expansion and growth of agriculture. Transport has become the key area the federal state of UAE has tried to open up its economy to local and outsider players. The countryââ¬â¢s conviction is that presence of vibrant trade and commerce activities are the key to economic development and growth of the country. In order to maintain contact and continued interaction with outside and local markets, the country continues to invest heavily in transport sector, which in turn has accelerated the countryââ¬â¢s economic base. For example, UAE has been involved in developing key transportation infrastructure projects that include Port Khalifa and industrial zone at Taweelah. In addition, there has been initiation of a mega-project (Union Railway project) which has an estimate cost of $ 8 billion (Anonymous, 2011). The Abu Dhabi International Airport is another key project the country has heavily invested in where the cost of this project amounts to about $ 6.7 billion. More transport infrastructure that the country has heavily invested includes the expansion of the Dubai metro and construction of the Abu Dhabi metro and light rail (Anonymous, 2011). The essence of all these transport projects is to see development of UAE economy especially through increased bilateral and multilateral trade relations. The country envision growth of economy specifically through presence of new systems construction that are largely related to multi-modal freight and intelligent supply chain management which in totality possess the ability to increase trade opportunities. Current and future of UAE UAE economy as it appears for now seems to be largely diversified and oil economy no longer remains the sole backbone o f the countryââ¬â¢s economy. Nevertheless, the oil revenues remain the key resources to stimulate economies of other sectors. Together with the oil economy, service economy in UAE has been thriving at a promising rate a situation that has led to growth of UAE economy (Oxford Business Group, 2008). As more effort remains centered on improving and accelerating the non-oil sector, it can be seen that economic development of the federal is likely to continue on an upward trend. For example, in 2003 and the subsequent four year-periods, the economy of the country oscillated around 10% and Abu Dhabi was the key contributing emirate (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Oil remains the single-most contributor to the GDP of the country, accounting for about 35% of the GDP (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Following the oil sector is the manufacturing sector, which account for about 13% to the GDP of the country. Trade and repair is at position three where it is perceived to account for about 11% o f the GDP to the economy and thereafter, real estate sector contribute about 8% to the countryââ¬â¢s GDP (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Predicted economic growth and progress for the country remain live despite impacts of financial crises that took place recently. The advantage the country has can be exhibited in its strong economic fundamentals, which appear to be solid and steadfast despite the financial challenges. Because of these, in 2008, it was predicted that UAE real GDP growth would accelerate by about 6.5% with potentials of reaching 7% over the next five years despite the impacts of global economic slowdown (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Inflation remains worry- factor in the federation and in the larger GCC Countries block. This aspect has become serious to extend that there was delayed GCC monetary union. The inflation in the region can be explained by the windfall gains from high oil prices, which gave GCC Countries more cash than many of their domestic markets coul d handle. As a result, inflation has gradually become the bugbear that follows the successes of every economy in the region. In 2007, UAE surpassed the psychological inflation barrier of 10%, which further translated to an increase of 11.1% rise in the price of goods and services (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Furthermore, in 2008, report by Samba Financial Group indicated that, inflation in the UAE went into double figures that reached 11.1% while it was 11.3% in Dubai and 11.7% in Abu Dhabi, which meant that consumer price index growth could be to something closer to 20% (Oxford Business Group, 2008). Predicted economic growth Source: Oxford Business Group, 2008 Conclusion UAE since it got its independence has become an economic hub and its influence within the GCC region countries continue to increase. Today, UAE is one of the leading countries in the world as far as matters of GDP and per capita growth are concerned. Moreover, the country has one of the satisfied citizenry popu lations in the world and this can be associated to increased equitable distribution of resources in the country. Oil and gas resources are the key aspects upon which the economy of the country is founded and for a long time, revenues from the hydrocarbons remain the backbone of GDP for the country. Nevertheless, some emirates like Dubai have been found to be less blessed with these vast natural resources and the country has in return increased efforts to diversify its economy. As a result, today the country has diversified its economy to numerous sectors such as construction and real estate, transport, financing, agriculture, tourism, and the entire service sector. The fruits from these diversifications are numerous, with results being reflected in the continued growth of the countryââ¬â¢s GDP. Furthermore, it has to be noted that, growth and economic progress in the country has come about due to political stability and transparency in the distribution of resources, which in turn has enabled the government to initiate more economic strategic plans and policies. Therefore, as much as oil and gas resources remain key to economy of UAE, it should be remembered that non-oil sector at the same time is promising and remain quite viable hence numerous investments should be directed at these sectors. Child labour and devolopment Essays
Child labour and devolopment Essays Child labour and devolopment Essay Child labour and devolopment Essay Now a yearss child labor is really popular term. What is the significance of kid labor? We can specify the kid labor in this manner child labor is work by kids, the nature and strength of which takes a batch of clip off from analyzing and causes harm to their wellness and development ( K. B. Levchenko, O.A. Kalashink, Ukraine, 2007 ) . But, can we state each and every individual cognizant from this word. If, I tell to student what they know about child labor, or what they have heard from other individual or they have learnt from telecasting, wireless, and magazine. We sure that group of different people understands the difference between acceptable signifier of work for kids and child labor and besides major ground behind the kid labor ( International Labour Organization, 2009 ) . Group of people knows the kid labor but why they are disregarding it. Working Topographic point Child labour we can see in tea stall, in grossery store, in hotel, in flat for rinsing auto or in private house. We can non state any work topographic point has left where child labor is non working. An estimated information 120 million kids between the age of five and 14 are employed in the universe s topographic points runing from mills to farm, mines, and about every types of unskilled work ( W. Mark, N. Robert and R. Natalia, 1998 ) . On the same manner, if we talk about African state so we find that child labor is more widespread in Ethiopia and Ghana. The net registration rate in Ethiopia is the lowest in the universe. Girls suffer comparatively more disadvantage in both the states. In both states, bulk of the kids are engaged in family activities. In Ghana, farm labor dominant while in Ethiopia, bringing fuel wood, H2O and crowding labour predominant ( Sonia Bhalotra, 2003 ) . From this statement it is clear that people does non cognize, what child labor is? They do non cognize about exact age of the kid labor and they exploit the kids. They do non cognize any international convention. International convention gives the guideline about the minimal age of the kids for making work. This international convention explain the minimal age set out clear guideline to authorities of each states to specify the minimal age at which kids should be allowed to work. International labour organisation has introduced two different major conventions for specifying the minimal age of the kids. These conventions are- ILO Convention No. 138 on minimal age and 2nd one is ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst signifier of child labor ( International Labour Organisation study ) . REASON FOR CHILD LABOUR Child labor is serious job in all over the universe. Almost all the states are suffered with this incidence. Africa has the highest incidence of child labor in the universe. The chief ground is due to economic diminution, war, HIV/AIDS behind the kid labor in Africa. Children do non travel to school and whole twenty-four hours they do work in different topographic points. Majority of kids in Africa are engaged in house based farm and endeavors. But top administration degree is non accepted it ( Sonia Bhalotra, 2003 ) . Another chief ground is described really good that there is no any strong relation has been developed between grownup and kids. So as to adult can learn them for spell to school. Because young person are the most responsible group in society so they can assist to the kids for divergence. Family members claim kids do non travel to school so, in this instance members prefer kids make some work and gain money. So here it is proved that there is no good relation between grownup and kids ( Sonia Bhalotra, 2003 ) . From above discussed all the statements non depict, why do the kids work? There are many grounds behind for child labor. Poverty is the most commonly restraints which leads to do child labor. The kids may work because they think net returns from instruction are low or negligible and the returns to work experience are high. The strength of market and establishment moderate the kid labor. In markets, tonss of plants are available so these reinforce the kids to make work. Market gives inducement to kids so they attract the kids. Generally it s happens that in markets prefer child alternatively of grownup. Because, for little work grownup demand more rewards, but in instance of kid, kid neer demand more money and hence stay in market. On that status market gives some inducement. So this type of market status demand more figure of child labors. Market prefermore figure of child labor because, one historical analyses comes out that kid labors are easy to command and they work with full con centration. Change in engineering besides leads to do addition in demand of child labor. As a assistant market prefer more child labor. Because engineering has reduced the work burden so they do non like grownups labour for more work in this status they demand child labour as a assistant ( Sonia Bhalotra, 2003 ) . Consequence ON CHILD LABOUR Child labor is largely in developing states in Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is broad distributing. This broad spreading incident causes inauspicious consequence on kid. It affects the wellness and their developmental. Due to difficult work they suffer with scrawny growing. Their work is frequently risky and has great hazard with assorted occupational diseases. In some state kids work in pesticide mills and other chemical based mills in this conditions child mortality rate has been increasing ( W. Mark, N. Robert and R. Natalia, 1998 ) . Registration in school and dropout instances increase after child labor. Most informations set describe an reverse correlativity between child labor and instruction. Child maltreatment besides arises from child labor. Because kids go for work in different topographic points in instance of acquiring more end product store or mills proprietor abuse them. Child maltreatment is common in fabric companies, little store, in this state of affairs they are exploited by the mills proprietors. Factories proprietors exploit in sense of more on the job hours and twenty-four hours by paying same rewards ( W. Mark, N. Robert and R. Natalia, 1998 ) . CHILD LABOUR AND PEOPLE VIEW Group of people say child labour non affects the kids instruction instead makes to kids self sustain. Harmonizing to human perceptual experience age of kids is for larning. If kids learn in childhood so it will be better for future. A kid earns money so it is non bad because he can gain money for paying school fee and for pocket sweeps. Many households have no get good support with economic status. In this state of affairs they send to kids for earn. Family members give support for making work because kids are the productive beginning and they can increase the wealth of the house. Most data sets describe an reverse correlativity between instruction and child labor. If we see at micro level so it is unsurprising as these are viing usage of clip for gaining. Children from Ethiopia, kid work in rural Ethiopia may let kids to pay for school fee, and bring forthing a positive relationship with household and others ( Rose and Al-Samarrai, 1997 ) . At a clip kids can make both reading and w ork so it is more economical efficient. In the clip changeless job, engagement in school and work are jointly give more results. In this instance, household and child both acquire benefit. In this state of affairs add excess cost benefit in state s economic system. CHILD LABOUR AND HUMAN RIGHT In some instances people think child labor is non a human right misdemeanor. I think it is illegal and promotes many societal related issues. More market demand of child labour leads to do kid trafficking. In Pakistan, kid trafficking is really serious job, where most of the trafficked Bengali kids are sold. There are about 200,000 adult females and kids in the slave trade. Lawyers for Human Rights and Legal Aid ( LHRLA ) of Pakistan have reported that more than 19,000 kids from the different parts chiefly from Middle East have been trafficked and all kids holding age in between 2 old ages to 11 old ages. Trafficked have been occurred through camel jockeys to the Middle East, a trade that can give cost for their lives. Human are traveling against the human right misdemeanor non merely through the kid trafficking instead they have been making child harlotry. Harmonizing to LHRLA study about 40,000 kids are in harlotry in Pakistan ( ILO-IPEC, IPEC In Action, Pakistan, 1998 ) . Unwanted group of people they call to kids with the aid of other clients. These clients come in contact with those people who are hapless, and holding no resources for income coevals. These clients give good occupation offer to their kids but, they are liar. And therefore these parents became agree to direct ain kids for work. They do non cognize what will be happened. After that these client sell them to other for few money. They do non cognize what humanistic disciplines are? They pick kid from needed household or hapless household, sometime they forcefully pick kids from the family. They forcefully send the kids in to madrassas for preparation as a activist ( ILO-IPEC, IPEC In Action, Pakistan, 1998 ) . They are work against human right. Children are come on Earth for making better development non for development. Many Torahs have been made by different bureau and organisation against child labor. Main maps of the Torahs are to protect kid lives and supply better platform for development. Children s Right International Mission is to advance the meaningful execution of the United Nations Conventions on the Right of the Child ( the Convention ) by conveying together Judgess, attorneies, instructors, professionals, and other protagonism to advance, protect and move on the involvement of kids. The mission of CRI is to supervise and promote the success application of the rule of the Convention and besides to develop and help the individual in kids s right protagonism ( Bill Jackson, Australia, 2008 ) . In favour of kids s right the International Labour Organization ( ILO ) has been introduced Torahs in signifiers of Child Labour Convention No. 182 ( C182 ) and ( R190 ) , address the right issues whether new attacks to protecting the kids s right and fulfilment of their demand ( Bill Jackson, Austr alia, 2008 ) . Child trafficking is a end point of child labors so authorities which have non yet use scheme so for commanding trafficking should use UN protocol to prevents and should make full spread between authorities policy and pattern ( Mike Dottridge, 2004 ) . CHILD LABOUR AND DEVELOPMENT To do universe free from child labor so foremost we have to alter our head set up. We know all the things but wittingly we have done. We will hold to alter our perceptual experience. Children are guiltless and do non cognize about huge universe. We should give regard to kids s right and labour rights. Labour rights to happen in supply concatenation. Many big companies of the universe like Reebok International Ltd. , Levi Strauss, IKEA say no child labor . ( A. Balaguer, UNICEF ) . These companies do non work with concern spouses that use child labor. These companies are profit doing but they no societal norms and duties. On the other manus other companies do non give regard to kids s right and labor rights and they start development of the labor particularly child labor. these companies ever arrange run intoing on homo right criterions and ever making scrutinizing and monitoring to forestall child labor.

IPad in India - Research Paper Example s most advanced economies in terms of communication as the country can boost of the presence of some of the worldââ¬â¢s largest communication companies. The product use pattern in India is highly consolidated with global usage pattern. What this means is that the people of India adjust themselves to product patterns as it applies to other parts of the world where most products are manufactured. Because of the influence that globalization has on product use pattern in India, consumers in most urban parts of India prefer sophisticated product features just as exists in manufacturing origins like America and Europe. Retailing is a major source of employment for most people in India (Bultez et al., 2009). Because of this, there is several retail shops scattered all around the country. Most of these outlets are however filled with basic electronic and technology products such as computer parts and mobile devices. Quite recently, the use of social media has come to dominant the medium of advertisement in India. There is also the use of sources like televisions, which has the highest patronage and reaches (Card, 2009). Billboards, radio advertisement, posters and newspaper advertisements are all popular. This section of the paper has been dedicated to looking at India as a potential and viable market destination for iPad products. It has been established that globalization is fast catching up with the people in India and so they seem highly advanced with the use of technology tools including mobile devices like the iPad. Patrons in India would want to purchase the newest and latest releases on the international market, as and when they are launched. India believes in organized market and so deals less with middlemen. The use of multiple forms of media has been identified to be the most effective way to reach out to a larger population of potential customers (Stern, and El-Ansari, 2002). This means that the electronic and press media will all be used. Due to the

Organizations and group behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Organizations and group behavior - Essay Example In accordance with the issues discussed in the paper the increase of competition in all industries has led organizations to search for strategies, which can help them to develop a competitive advantage towards their rivals. In order to identify the key elements of group behavior it should be necessary to understand primarily the characteristics of a group, as part of the organizational life. In accordance with Martin within organizations, different forms of group can be identified: a) individuals working on similar organizational activities may not constitute a group; for example, the lecture staff in the same department of a particular university may not meet or cooperate; these individuals cannot be characterized as a group, b) the sub-sections of certain organizational departments are often parts of formal organizational units and they are likely to help towards the completion of organizational tasks of low importance, c) informal groups within organizations are common for promoti ng specific organizational tasks or ideas; for instance, the case of ââ¬Ëfriendship groupings and task-depended networksââ¬â¢, d) groups related to a particular organizational project can be developed within an organization; these groups, formal or informal, are not permanent, as for example ââ¬Ëa project group working on the building of a new oil refineryââ¬â¢, e) formal and informal groups can be developed within organizations for completed a particular organizational task; these groups are ââ¬Ëtransientââ¬â¢, as for example a formal group working on the reduction of the organizationââ¬â¢s travel expenses by 10%.... within an organization; these groups, formal or informal, are not permanent (Martin 232), as for example ââ¬Ëa project group working on the building of a new oil refineryââ¬â¢ (Martin 232), e) formal and informal groups can be developed within organizations for completed a particular organizational task; these groups are ââ¬Ëtransientââ¬â¢ (Martin 232), as for example a formal group working on the reduction of the organizationââ¬â¢s travel expenses by 10% (Martin 232). The development of group activities within modern organizations has been often related to the trend of firms to imitate the strategies of their rivals (Griffin and Moorhead 2011). In the study of Griffin and Moorhead (2011) reference is made to the risks that such strategy can hide mostly because of the following fact: the use of teams for promoting organizational plans can be beneficial for organizations but the costs involved can be also significant. The case of Ampex is mentioned as an example of the benefits of team development within modern organization: in Ampex, the involvement of teams in organizational activities led to the increase of ââ¬Ëonline customer delivery by 98%) (Griffin and Moorhead 272). In Texas Instruments, the use of teams for developing the daily organizational tasks resulted to the reduction of organizational costs for about 50% (Griffin and Moorhead 272). Also, in Eastman, the development of teams across the organization supported the increase of organizational performance at significant levels; the productivity of the organization was increased for about 70%, a result which was directly related to the involvement of teams in all organizational projects (Griffin and Moorhead 272). In accordance with the above findings, the role of group in the development of organizational performance,

Child Abuse Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Child Abuse Paper - Essay Example (Roberts) It is both shocking and disheartening that the abuse of children, despite the legal sanctions in place in every part of the world, is still so rampant. This paper will attempt to discuss the history of child abuse, the different forms of the crime and the punishment set for abusers. Historical Background Throughout history, children have been abused and neglected. This is said to be a result of the low value placed on children. (Weisberg) The maltreatment of children has its roots in ancient times. Two examples from the Bible that stand out are when a Pharaoh orders babies to be killed during Mosesââ¬â¢ time and when King Herod instructs the killing of infants during Christââ¬â¢s birth. It is said that children were considered ââ¬Å"propertyâ⬠in ancient times and were easily sold, mutilated, killed or used as sacrifice for the gods. (Volpe) This disregard for children continued until the Middle Ages. During this period, unwanted children served as apprentices w hile those with deformities were declared omens of evil and were killed. (Child Abuse) Parents and even teachers in the Medieval Period believed that beating the child was the norm for instilling discipline. (Snell) Because society did not see it wrong parents teach their children by way of spanking or hitting the latter, most of the reported cases of child abuse were between masters and servants, who were children. (Child Abuse) The case of Mary Allen McCormack in 1874 was the first time a victim of child abuse was brought out in the open. McCormack had been given up for adoption and was physically abused by her adoptive mother until her neighbors brought her case to the Department of Public Charities and Corrections. (Markel) Ironically, the case was initiated by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as there were no laws to protect children from physical abuse inflicted by parents. Fortunately, the case triggered movements for the formulation and enforceme nt of laws to rescue and protect abused children. (Watkins) Forms of Child Abuse According to the World Health Organization, child abuse and neglect is defined as ââ¬Å"all forms of physical and emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation that results in actual or potential harm to the childââ¬â¢s health, development or dignity.â⬠(Child Maltreatment) Physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and negligent treatment, emotional abuse and exploitation are the five types of child abuse. Each of these may be described in various ways in different nations. In the United States for example, although the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) gives the minimum criterion for physical child abuse, child neglect, and sexual abuse, it also only defines sexual abuse and special cases concerning withholding or failing to provide medically indicated treatment. (Pecora, et. al.) Physical abuse is generally inflicting bodily harm to a child when in anger. The trauma should be non-accidental. This is also referred to battered child syndrome. People who beat children are often those abused themselves when they were young. Nevertheless, alcoholism, domestic violence, drug abuse, lack of education, poverty and being a single parent can increase the risk of abuse. (Child Abuse -

Canadas benefits of globalisation Throughout many years the issue of Globalization has been around and has only been uprising to a broader term. Globalization has impacted everyone from Europe too North America, everyone around the Globe. However, even though the term globalization in modern times is distinct from what it may have been years ago, it has still been around. One country in particular that has been coming more into familiarity with globalization is Canada and many Canadians have debated whether globalization is good or bad for the country. By definition globalization is the growth to a global or worldwide scale. Globalization describes an ongoing process by which regional economies, societies and cultural have become integrated through a globe spanning network of communication and trade. The term also refers equally to political, social, cultural, and environmental interdependence. Within the political aspect, globalization means that the governments are increasingly implicated in events that occur well beyond their own borders. When looking at the cultural aspect, globalization can mean the connection between us and learning other cultures by traveling and learning other languages. The Term globalization has many meaning to it but this is because it is a very important factor that has and will continue to affects us all. Globalization affecting everyone around the globe, and Canada is no exception. Communication technology is only improving in our time and will continue to do so in Canada especially. More Canadians are getting use to the new forms of keeping in touch with each other. Lastly, over the past 20 years Canada has been benefited from globalization politically, economically and culturally through the infinite opportunities and new life style we have been adapting to. Globalization by definition refers to the process of increased interconnectedness among countries around the world, which is noticeable mainly through the areas of economics, politics and culture. It is affecting everyone around the globe, and Canada is no exception. Canadians, have been up to date with the latest technology, news updates and are also showing new movies that have been produced and filmed in other countries, in our theatres. When studying and trying to break down globalization it is important to know that there are a variety of aspects to it. The many spheres consist of Globalization and workplace, politic, social, culture and environment. Globalization and Workplace means that many Canadians work for companies with operations in a number of countries around the world. Politics globalization means that governments are increasingly impacted in events that occur well beyond their own boarders. Next we have the Social sphere. The social sphere of globalization means that friendships and family ties extend around the world and that our neighbors come from half a dozen different countries, speak different languages, and worship different religions. An example of this is when Canadians shop they are typically more than likely purchasing things that have been imported from other different countries around the world. The culture sphere is yet another form of globalization. Here it means that some Hollywood movies are as popular in Europe as they are in Los Angeles. The culture sphere also refers to more communication and contact with each other and our cultures, through doing activities such as; vacationing and travelling, reading magazines and books from around the world which also may be in different languages. A modern example of this is when people use Facebook. Facebook allows us to keep in touch with each other from around the globe. Lastly, is the environment sphere. We are increasingly aware that how we use natural resources-air, water, land, mi nerals, trees, and fish in one corner of the world has significant implications for the rest of the planet. For example a quick spread of a disease such as HIV or AIDS, can affect us quickly in any part of the world. (Skinner, 278-280). As the years go by communication technology has played a vast role in globalization. As described previously globalization is the interconnection between people, countries, around the world. Communication Technology does that exactly, it keeps Canadians and others around the world interconnected through the lasted technology inventions/developments. According to the article Globalization provides a better life for all globalization is a beneficial process that has been in our lives through any years. Mainly because of the positive and long term benefit it provides. This includes prosperity, security and enrichment. It transformed North America from an agrarian to an industrial society and is the primary reason why Canadians enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world. (Graham, 1-2) This is exactly the form of how Canadians keep in touch with one another and others around the world in modern times. Web sites such as; Facebook, MySpace, Hotmail and so on, are all a much r eliable way for Canadians to socialize with friends and as well as find out the latest news about events occurring within the country and outside. An example of how interconnect Canadians have become through the years is the fact that one in four of them having Facebook. Nearly 8 million Canadians more than one in four have a Facebook profile page. (Sorensen, 1). This is according to a study done by Toronto-based Solutions Research Group. This shows just how Canadians are becoming more and more reliable yet interconnected by the new communication technology, through Facebook a global socializing website. This makes Canadians between the most connected in the global socializing site in the world. In addition, since there are countless new technologies in the communication field, Canadians are discovering that it is much easier to communicate faster and more efficiently. Some individuals are finding ways to put into practice new communication technologies in a fraction of their lives. For example, students at school are using devices such as scanners, web cameras, and various networks to increase their own interest and skills. In the business and working field society is using devices such as the Internet, e-mail and fax machines to become more productive. Meanwhile the individuals who are at home are using communication technology devices such as television with satellites and cell phones, in an exaggerated way to be entertained. Globalization has also affected Canada politically, economically, and culturally. Canada has been considered to be a much stable democracy; it has been ranked the third most self-governing nation in its democracy index. However because Canada is such a democratic country it is important for the government to use the means of communication to help run the nation whenever there are any issues or in terms of immigration and imports from other countries. Canada has also been known to help out other countries that need help in times of need. An example of this is when the earthquake of January 2010 hit Haiti. The Canadian government sent out thousands of Canadian soldiers and funds to help out Haiti, showing just how politics do play a role in globalization as well. Globalization in the economical aspect is the understanding of a worldwide general market, based on the freedom of exchange of goods and resources. The interconnectedness of these markets, however, meant that an economic subside in one area could impact other areas. With globalization, companies can produce goods and services in the lowest cost location. This may cause jobs to be moved to locations that have the lowest wages, least worker protection and lowest health benefits. For manufacturing activities this may cause production to move to areas with the least pollution regulations or worker safety regulations. One Canadian article states the following; à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦only those countries that have opened their economies to international trade, capital flows and competitions have experienced economic progress. (Graham, 1). It is beneficial to the Canadian economy, as well as the world economy, because it is allowing Canadian corporations to spread business around the world, in othe r countries for cheap and at the same time it allows closure for Canadian made products. Finally, within the cultural aspect of globalization it is evident that here is where mainly everyone can connect with each other not only through communication technology but through the different types of culture. An obvious example of this is when individuals take place when we travel to different countries on vacations and when we practice different cultures in our nation, or learn and speak different languages from other countries and cultures. Furthermore, once again globalization refers equally to political, economical, social, cultural, and environmental interdependence. It is affecting everyone around the globe, and Canada is no exception. Contact with one another through the new communication technology is only improving in our time and will continue to do so, especially in a country that has high luxury standards like Canada. More Canadians are getting use to the new forms of keeping in touch with each other. Lastly, over the past 20 years Canada has been benefited from globalization politically, economically and culturally through the infinite opportunities and new life style we have been adapting to.

A Persuasive Essay Against School Uniforms :: School Uniforms Argumentative
High school is typically a time when kids begin to distinguish themselves from one another. Students begin to develop their own sense of personal style, desperately trying to both fit in and stand out simultaneously. Being self-conscious and often lacking the confidence needed to assert themselves, teens are forced to use clothing and outward appearance as the means to manifest this individuality. Thus, students should not be forced to wear uniforms to school. Standard uniforms are unproven deterrents to student violence; are a "Band-Aid" to cover up the real problems faced by children and teens; and they violate students' right of self-expression, depriving them of their search for identity. There is something comforting about school children and teenagers dressed in pleats and plaid. Maybe it is a reminder of past times, or conjures up thoughts of order and safety. Whatever the reason, school uniforms are getting a lot of ?wear? these days, yet remain an unproven deterrent to school violence. No long-term, formal studies have been done with regards to the effectiveness of school uniforms, but many schools have kept their own informal statistics, such as the Long Beach School District. These statistics offered by Long Beach are often most cited as a proven deterrent to school violence, after adopting a mandatory uniform policy in 1994. According to Richard Van Der Laan, school crime has dropped over seventy-five percent, while attendance has reached an all-time high. One question we must ask ourselves is this, ?Is it the uniforms, or the induction of them that is solving the problem?? Maybe it is the school and parents showing some ?back-bone? which is affecting t he students, not the clothing. If you are a skeptic, get in line. There is no concrete evidence proving uniforms alone cause such dramatic reductions in crime, but rather, these policies appear to act as nothing more that a ?Band-Aid? that fails to address the real causes of youth violence. Although this violence, including sexual assault, can be linked to ?free-dress?, it is not dependent upon it, and points to deeper, more significant problems within the youth community. Violence is not learned by clothing, but rather through unfit home situations, negative friendships, and even popular culture (including emulation of television, media, music, and movies). A simple change in dress will not abolish these problems, but merely hide them for a time.

Fresh Foods and Canned Foods Essay
Eating is an activity that we regularly do at least twice a day. We live in a world where the variety of food is immense, and we decide what we eat and how it will affect our bodies. As a reason, flavor, health benefits, and cost are the differences between eating fresh foods and canned foods. The most notable difference between these two kinds of foods is their flavor. Fresh foods have great flavor and taste because they keep all their natural conditions. In contrast, canned foods lack a lot of its flavor characteristics because there are some other chemical products added to the natural foods. For instance, the producers used to add more salt to a canned of beef to make the product salty instead of leaving its natural flavor. It is logical that fresh foods will have a better taste and flavor because you will satisfy with your own taste when you do the cooking while the canned food do not give your own favorite taste. By comparing both types of foods we notice another difference. Health is a factor that affects both of them. Canned foods lose some of the original fresh food nutrients when they are stored. They have to be tinned with many conservatives and chemical factors that extend the shelf life and apparent freshness of the food, but could also become poisonous if consumed often. Moreover, canned foods will be expired in a specific time. Therefore, it is dangerous when you do not notice the expired day of the canned foods. Another difference between these two types of foods is the cost. Canned foods are more expensive than fresh foods. The benefit of buying canned foods is that they are easier to find, for example, in a supermarket instead of the market like the fresh foods, and they require less work to prepare than fresh foods, just open and serve. As we can see it comes down to a personal choice, based on the time each person has, the money and the importance he or she gives to his or her nutrition and health. Therefore, it is important that you consider your possibilities and choose the best type of foods for your convenience and lifestyle.

Robert Bakker - A Profile of the Famous Paleontologist
Robert Bakker - A Profile of the Famous Paleontologist Name:à Robert Bakker Born: 1945 Nationality:à American About Robert Bakker Probably no paleontologist alive today has had as much of an impact on popular culture as Robert Bakker. Bakker was one of the technical advisers for the original Jurassic Park movie (along with two other famous figures from the dinosaur world, Jack Horner and the science writer Don Lessem), and a character in the sequel The Lost World, Dr. Robert Burke, was inspired by him. He has also written a best-selling novel (Raptor Red, about a day in the life of a Utahraptor), as well as the 1986 nonfiction book The Dinosaur Heresies. (Theres a bit of an in-joke in The Lost World: Bakker believes Tyrannosaurus Rex was a predator, while Horner believes T. Rex was a scavenger, so having Burke eaten whole in the movie lends support to the former hypothesis!) Among his fellow paleontologists, Bakker is best known for his theory (inspired by his mentor John H. Ostrom) that dinosaurs were warm-blooded, pointing to the active behavior of raptors like Deinonychus and the physiology of sauropods, whose cold-blooded hearts, Bakker argues, wouldnt have been capable of pumping blood all the way up to their heads, 30 or 40 feet above the ground. Althoughà Bakker is known for stating his viewsà forcefully, not all of his fellow scientists are convinced, some of them suggesting that dinosaurs may have had intermediate or homeothermic metabolisms rather than being strictly warm- or cold-blooded. ââ¬â¹Bakker is a bit of maverick in another way: in addition to being the curator of paleontology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, hes also an ecumenical Pentecostal minister who likes to argue against interpreting biblical texts literally, preferring to see the New and Old Testaments as guides to ethics rather than to historical or scientificà facts. Unusually for a paleontologist who has had such an outsized impact on his field, Bakker isnt especially well known for his field work; for instance, he hasnt discovered or named any dinosaurs (or prehistoric animals) of note, though he did have a hand in investigating Allosaurus nesting sitesà in Wyomingà (and concluding that the hatchlings of these predators received at least a modicum of parental attention). Bakkers influence can be traced above all to The Dinosaur Heresies; many of the theories he promotes in this book (including his speculation that dinosaurs grew much more rapidly than had been previously believed) have since been widely accepted by both the scientific establishment and the general public.

Belgium Overview and Geography
Belgium Overview and Geography Population: 10.5 million (July 2009 estimate)Capital: BrusselsArea: Approximately 11,780 square miles (30,528 sq km)Borders: France, Luxembourg, Germany and the NetherlandsCoastline: About 40 miles (60 km) on the North Sea Belgium is an important country to both Europe and the rest of the world as its capital, Brussels, is the headquarters the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and of the European Commission and the Council of the European Union. In addition, that city is the home of many worldwide banking and insurance firms, leading some to call Brussels the unofficial capital of Europe. History of Belgium Like many of the worlds countries, Belgium has a long history. Its name is derived from the Belgae, a Celtic tribe that lived in the area in the first century B.C.E. Also, during the first century, the Romans invaded the area and Belgium was controlled as a Roman province for nearly 300 years. Around 300 C.E., Romes power began to diminish when Germanic tribes were pushed into the area and eventually the Franks, a German group, took control of the country. After the arrival of the Germans, the northern part of Belgium became a German-speaking area, while the people in the south remained Roman and spoke Latin. Soon after, Belgium became controlled by the Dukes of Burgundy and was eventually taken over by the Hapsburgs. Belgium was then later occupied by Spain from 1519 to 1713 and Austria from 1713 to 1794. In 1795, however, Belgium was annexed by Napoleonic France after the French Revolution. Shortly thereafter, Napoleons army was beaten during the Battle of Waterloo near Brussels and Belgium became a part of the Netherlands in 1815. It was then not until 1830 that Belgium won its independence from the Dutch. In that year, there was an uprising by the Belgian people and in 1831, a constitutional monarchy was established and a monarch from the House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in Germany was invited to run the country. Throughout the decades following its independence, Belgium was invaded several times by Germany. In 1944 though, British, Canadian and America armies formally liberated Belgium. Languages of Belgium Because Belgium was controlled by different foreign powers for centuries, the country is very diverse linguistically. Its official languages are French, Dutch and German but its population is divided into two distinct groups. The Flemings, the larger of the two, live in the north and speak Flemish- a language closely related to Dutch. The second group lives in the south and consists of the Walloons who speak French. In addition, there is a German community near the city of Lià ¨ge and Brussels is officially bilingual. These different languages are important to Belgium because concerns over losing linguistic power has caused the government to divide the country into different regions, each of which has control over its cultural, linguistic and educational matters. Belgiums Government Today, Belgiums government is run as a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarch. It has two branches of government. The first is the executive branch which consists of the King, who serves as the head of state; the Prime Minister, who is the head of government; and the Council of Ministers which represents the decision-making cabinet. The second branch is the legislative branch which is a bicameral parliament made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The major political parties in Belgium are the Christian Democratic, the Liberal Party, the Socialist Party, the Green Party and Vlaams Belang. Voting age in the country is 18. Because of its focus on regions and local communities, Belgium has several political subdivisions, each of which have a varied amount of political power. These include ten different provinces, three regions, three communities and 589 municipalities. Industry and Land Use of Belgium Like many other European countries, Belgiums economy consists mainly of the service sector but industry and agriculture are also significant. The northern area is considered the most fertile and much of the land there is used for livestock, although some of the land is used for agriculture. The main crops in Belgium are sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and barley. In addition, Belgium is a heavily industrialized country and coal mining was once important in southern areas. Today, though, almost all of the industrial centers are in the north. Antwerp, one of the largest cities in the country, is the center of petroleum refining, plastics, petrochemicals and the manufacturing of heavy machinery. It is also famous for being one of the worlds largest diamond trading centers. Geography and Climate of Belgium The lowest point in Belgium is sea level at the North Sea and its highest point is Signal de Botrange at 2,277 feet (694 m). The rest of the country features a relatively flat topography consisting of coastal plains in the northwest and gently rolling hills throughout the countrys central portion. The southeast, however, does have a mountainous region in its Ardennes Forest area. The climate of Belgium is considered maritime temperate with mild winters and cool summers. The average summer temperature is 77ÃÅ¡F (25ÃÅ¡C) while winters average around 45ÃÅ¡F (7ÃÅ¡C). Belgium can also be rainy, cloudy and humid. A Few More Facts About Belgium Belgium has a literacy rate of 99%The life expectancy is 78.685% of Belgians live in towns and citiesNearly 80% of the population of Belgium is Roman Catholic but there are several other religions in the country, all of which receive government subsidies. Role of Knowledge Management in enhancing mgt. decision making in Lab Report
Role of Knowledge Management in enhancing mgt. decision making in Toyota - Lab Report Example Corporate management is now handling a global-scale brand of management, requiring a different kind of strategy, much distinct from traditional management. Advancement in technology is fast; innovations are applied every minute. There is what we call Web 2.0, or web-enabled infrastructure allowing business-customer and business-to-business interaction. This spawns databasing or shared repositories. The internet has revolutionized business functions and introduced countless innovations in the globalized world. Toyota Motors is a knowledge-based, global firm, leading the world in the car manufacturing industry. It has been the worldââ¬â¢s leading car manufacturer, with branches worldwide, but recently a controversy has hounded its worldwide operations and colorful past, probably putting its leadership in the car industry in question. Problems over the hybrid Priusââ¬â¢ quality lapses that included braking problems and sticking gas pedals forced a global recall of 8.5 million vehicles, 6 million of them from the United States. Questions have arisen: how will Toyota resurrect from the ashes of a tainted hybrid Prius? Will it ever become the once glorious company which started its humble beginnings from a troubled Japanese economy? This essay will delve on the company Toyota, as a whole, and the particular technical aspect of its success ââ¬â the introduction of knowledge management. For all of its successes, knowledge management played a key role in Toyotaââ¬â¢s rise to ââ¬Ëstardomââ¬â¢. Toyota has been on the forefront of car making because of an effective strategic and operational management coupled with an efficient and competitive workforce. Their strategies involve innovations in production, marketing, sales and promotions, and branding. But to top it all, it has been able to handle knowledge management like it is a part of ordinary business. In the 1950s Toyota was only a
